FAQ

We’re bike nerds and proud of it. Here’s the deep dive on some of the technical details and features you’ll find on the 4060 Z.

Tell me more about Shimano EP801.

EP801 is more than just a motor, it’s a complete e-bike system. Motor, battery, controls and software have all been designed to work together seamlessly to offer the most natural and refined e-bike experience possible.

Motor:

The DU-EP801 motor, or drive unit as Shimano call it, weighs just 2.6 Kg but can provide up to 85 Nm of torque. Power is smooth, usable and adds to the ride experience without overwhelming it. The motor’s compact dimensions compliment the 4060 Z’s clean frame design and provide plenty of ground clearance even on technical trails. Internal components have been engineered to minimize drag and noise while giving a responsive and natural feel through the pedals.

Let us drop some science on you. Nm stands for Newton meter. We use it to describe the maximum amount of torque, turning force, that the motor can produce. More torque will feel like the motor is providing more assistance.

Battery:

We use a 720 Wh Darfon battery that is mounted inside the downtube. Large in capacity but slim in size it means we can carry over the sleek looks of the 4060 to the Z line. The battery is approved by Shimano to work with the EP8 system and can be serviced by authorized Shimano dealers, keeping things simple.

In case you were wondering, Wh stands for Watt hour. In the context of an e-bike battery it tells you how much energy it can potentially store. The more Wh the greater the power capacity which, all other things being equal, means longer battery life and more time riding.

Controls:

With great power comes great control. Ergonomically designed switchgear makes on the fly adjustments simple and a compact display unit with clear interface offers up as much, or little, information as you need. Integrated cable routing keeps the bike’s lines sleek and connections solid.

Software:

Tying all these elements together is state of the art software which you can choose to leave to do its thing or take full control of. Using Shimano’s E-TUBE PROJECT app you can use your phone or tablet to wirelessly update the system’s firmware, adjust the ride mode characteristics, diagnose and solve any errors and much more.

How do I charge the battery?

The battery can be charged either on the bike through a small port just above the motor bracket or off the bike. The bike comes with a 4A fast charger that can fully charge a battery in about five hours.

How do I remove the battery?

Removing the battery from the downtube is simple and only requires a 5mm Allen key - no special tools or key needed. The battery is securely held in place when installed so there are no annoying rattles even when the going gets rough.
